The Shop
When entering this shop, one immediately notices an unusual sign – PLEASE DON’T CLEAN THE BOTTLES – next to the selection of wines. It attests to the age and value of the bottles covered in dust. The more dust, the older they are. The older they are, the better the wine. For more than 100 years, since 1913, this fine grocery store has selected what it considers to be the best products. It is still one of the best places to buy Port wines.
Alternatively, one can buy old brandies and other alcoholic beverages, chocolates and sweets, national delicacies and regional products. Whilst waiting to be served, because the shop is always busy, or for your purchases to be wrapped, note the wood cabinetry around the shop and the signs in glass: “BONBONS”, “BISCUITS”, “CHOCOLATES” and the brand name “MACARIO M. FERREIRA – LIMITADA”. When you leave, or even when you arrive, note also the iron and stonemasonry framed shop window and also, underneath your feet, the shop name spelt into the Portuguese paving.
