The Shop
António Pereira da Trindade is a graduate in Philosophy devoted to the world of books and antiques. Back in the 1930s his grandparents began buying up the contents of houses – furniture, books and just about everything. Their shop was opposite the Monastery of Alcobaça. In 1960 António’s father opened this shop in Lisbon’s most iconic area for rare and second-hand books, Chiado. It started out in Rua da Anchieta, before moving to the current address in 1988. António learned the ropes of the business from his family members, and developed all else with experience, including his resistance to responding to the needs of the tourism phenomena that characterise many large cities today, putting business such as his at risk, and also his openness to the new technologies.
On the bookshop’s website one can order books and seek information on others, with texts on their historical and artistic contextualisation. It has a fantastic section devoted to “Unusual Books” which contains images and information on each one. The remaining sections reflect what one can find in the real-life shop: books arranged by subject matter, antiques, new releases, prints and etchings and magazines.
