The Shop
Founded in 1927, as Mercearia Nacional, it is a historic store in downtown Lisbon, which has been passed down from generation to generation. It is currently managed by Jaime Vaz, the grandson of the founder, Serafim Vaz. Throughout the 80's he began to specialize in wines, becoming in 1990 the Garrafeira Nacional. This store has a small museum that houses a priceless collection of bottles that can be admired and purchased by any enthusiast.
At one counter there is a map of the different types of Portuguese wines and their denominations of origin. Garrafeira Nacional offers a pedagogic and educational slant – on the specific nature of the wines on sale and the art of winemaking in general. Which is why advice is an important part of the sale – both instore and on the website. The website also offers a virtual tour of the shop space.
