The Shop
This “manor house” belongs to the Nunes family. It was founded by José Nunes and his wife Ana Luísa, who was also the cook in the early days, in a space that used to be a greengrocer’s shop and wine house. Today the restaurant is run by the couple’s two children: José António (known as “Zé Tó”) and Susana Nunes. Their parents’ origins in the Beira and Alentejo regions go some way to explaining the make-up of the menu.
The restaurant is sought out by all who appreciate traditional Portuguese cooking, and many come in the knowledge that the house has won many prizes for the quality of its dishes. In addition to the accolades, the walls are decorated with cuttings of newspaper and magazine articles dedicated to the house’s dishes and empathy. A lot of guests single out the rich fish soup for praise; it is made in a stone pot with pieces of stone bass and grouper and prawns – minus the shells, skin and bones.
