The Shop

The Casa da Sorte company was founded in Braga in 1933 by António Augusto Nogueira da Silva, with the shop now distinguished as an Historic Shop, which fronts onto both Rossio and Praça da Figueira, opening in 1940. The original design was by the architect Rodrigues Lima, who designed a number of Casa da Sorte branches around the country. In the 1960s the shop was altered substantially to a design by Conceição Silva, the same architect who designed the renovation of the Casa Testa around the same time.

The new configuration of the shop gave rise to particular habits, such as that of the customers who keep up the tradition of rubbing their lottery tickets on the feet of the statue of Queen Leonor in the hopes that this will bring good luck. When the knight commander Nogueira da Silva died, he left the business to the workers. The shares were distributed in accordance with years of service and the first shareholders include some of the owning partners who today run the company which has shops all over the country.
