The Shop

Where today one can enjoy a drink and good music was once a butcher’s shop. Looking at it today, one would never guess that the Xafarix, also known as “Luís Represas’ bar”, had such a past. Amongst the decorative elements one can appreciate the Gold, Platinum and Double Platinum discs awarded to Trovante, Represas’ band.

The bar was opened in 1986, and brought new verve to the city’s nightlife, with live music that fostered and disseminated original Portuguese artistic expression. A lot of different musicians performed here, all of whose careers were enhanced by the experience. The name, suggested by Maria Gouveia, the writer’s daughter, is inspired by the neighbouring Chafariz da Esperança, an 18th-century drinking fountain designed by Carlos Mardel.
