The Shop

The fado singer Lucília do Carmo and Alfredo de Almeida opened Adega da Lucília in 1946, on the 7th birthday of their son, Carlos. Several decades later, little Carlos became famous as the singer Carlos do Carmo – a great fado singer who grew up in a fado house, a markedly Lisbonian life story. In 1963, at the age of 24, he took over management of the space – until 1980. That year, O Faia was purchased by António Ramos.

The father António brought in his sons Pedro, as manager, and Paulo, as resident Portuguese guitar player. The resident artists included other big names: Lenita Gentil and Ricardo Ribeiro, António Rocha (who was considered “the king of popular fado”) and Anita Guerreiro, accompanied by Fernando Silva and Paulo Ramos. Stars who brought their own audience with them and also captivated those who had never heard of them before. All this whilst enjoying traditional Portuguese cuisine, before the lights are dimmed once more and the dense silence that only fado can fill and magnify falls over the place.
